“The perp was a mama raccoon.”

More Than We Remember by Christina Suzann Nelson

The Basics

Title: More Than We Remember by Christina Suzann Nelson

Genre: Christian Contemporary Fiction

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

From the Back Cover

One night changes everything. . . .

When Addison Kilbourn’s husband is involved in a car accident that leaves a woman dead, her perfectly constructed life crumbles apart. With her husband’s memory of that night gone and the revelation of a potentially life-altering secret, Addison has to reevaluate all she thought she knew.

Emilia Cruz is a deputy bearing a heavy burden far beyond the weight of her job. After a traumatic brain injury, her husband is no longer the man she married, and Emilia’s determined to prevent others from facing the same hardship. When she’s called to the scene of an accident pointing to everything she’s fighting against, she’s determined to see justice for those wronged.

Brianne Demanno is hiding from reality. She once thrived as a counselor, but when tragedy struck a beloved client, she lost faith in herself and her purpose. When her neighbors, the Kilbourns, are thrown into crisis, Brianne’s solitary life is disrupted and she finds herself needed in a way she hasn’t been for too long.

As the lives of these women intersect, they can no longer dwell in the memory of who they’ve been. Can they rise from the wreck of the worst moments of their lives to become who they were meant to be?

My Thoughts

Christina Suzann Nelson’s new book, More Than We Remember, is a powerful story of faith, friendship, and forgiveness. It’s the first book of hers I’ve read, and I’m so glad I decided to read it! It’s an emotionally engaging story full of complex characters who are faced with some incredibly difficult situations and discover the power of forgiveness.

The book follows three women whose lives are changed and intertwined as the result of a fatal car accident. All three women are strong, relatable characters who you want to root for, even when they are at odds with each other. It turns out they are alike in more ways than they think, and if they can find the strength to forgive and face the truth, even if it doesn’t look like they expected, they just might find healing in forging friendships with each other. Overall, this was a beautifully written, heartfelt book that will be enjoyed by fans of Beth K. Vogt, Catherine West, and Katie Ganshert.

Saints by Addison Bevere | Book Review

The Basics

Title: Saints: Becoming More Than “Christians”

Author: Addison D. Bevere

Genre: Christian Spiritual Growth

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

My Thoughts

What does it mean to find the good life, the abundant life Jesus promised? Addison Bevere explores this question by taking us through what it means to be saints. The good life, paradoxically, is found in death – both through Jesus’ death and sacrifice, and through our dying to ourselves. That death allows us to find life in God, to be remade into the people He made us to be: people who look and talk and act like Jesus. Our identity as saints means we can live out our eternal identity now, bringing His kingdom and His holiness to our world and the people around us.

This book is challenging and convicting, tackling familiar topics like fear of God, sin, and holiness in a fresh, insightful way. It leans much more heavily on Scripture than on the author’s personal stories, which I appreciate, although I enjoyed his stories and the glimpses of his life. I really enjoyed the study of this “old-fashioned” word, saints, and how learning what it means gives us a new perspective on basic, familiar gospel truths. This book is thought-provoking and encouraging – a book I think every Christian would benefit from reading!

First Line Friday | Stop Calling Me Beautiful

It’s time for another First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! The posts shared on this linkup typically feature fiction books, but I’m going to shake it up today and share from a nonfiction book: Stop Calling Me Beautiful by Phylicia Masonheimer. This is such an important book for today’s culture, I want everyone to know about it!

“I attended my first Bible study when I was 16 years old. I came into the house clutching my copy of Beth Moore’s Believing God and spent the next sixteen weeknights glued to my pastor’s TV screen.”

Stop Calling Me Beautiful by Phylicia Masonheimer

The Basics

Title: Stop Calling Me Beautiful: Finding Soul-Deep Strength in a Skin-Deep World

Author: Phylicia Masonheimer

Genre: Nonfiction – Christian Faith

Publication Date: February 18, 2020

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover: “You’re a beautiful daughter of the Most High King.” And it’s true. But it’s not the whole truth. The beauty of being God’s daughter has backstory.

If you’re tired of hearing the watered-down Christian teaching and hungry for a deeper spiritual life—one that gives real answers to your hardest questions—Stop Calling Me Beautiful teaches you how. You will learn:

  • how to pursue the truths of who God us and who you are in relationship to Him
  • how to study Scripture, and how your view of God determines how you face life’s challenges
  • how legalism, shallow theology, and false teaching keep you from living boldly as a woman of the Word
  • how to experience God’s presence in painful circumstances

Jesus doesn’t offer a powerless salvation. He makes your brokenness part of His whole redemption story—if you allow Him to. Don’t settle for a feel-good faith. If you want victory over insecurity, fear, shame, and the circumstances you are facing, it’s time to embrace Jesus. All of Him.

My Thoughts

Phylicia is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram, so I was so excited to read her book! If you’re not following her on Instagram, go do that now – she is such a needed voice in today’s world, teaching on discernment, how to study God’s Word, the importance of community, and more.

In Stop Calling Me Beautiful, Phylicia uses the story of the woman at the well to encourage us to go deeper in our faith and live as overcomers in Christ. Her writing style is convicting, practical, and full of grace, and her passion for her message shines through. She touches on topics like spiritual disciplines, legalism, anxiety, community, and more, showing us how the power of the gospel message and getting to know Jesus can transform every part of our lives. I found myself highlighting multiple lines in every chapter; this is definitely a book I will be re-reading and recommending to my friends. Read this book if you want to go deeper in your faith and in your understanding of theology – if you want to live an abundant life as an overcomer in Christ.

Now it’s your turn! Please share the first line of the book you’re reading in the comments below, and don’t forget to head to Hoarding Books to see what first lines other bloggers are sharing, or to share your own!

First Line Friday | If for Any Reason

Happy Friday! Today is another cold winter day in Maine – it’s currently 11°F! The book I’m sharing from today is the perfect summery escape, with the beautiful beachy cover and charming Nantucket setting. I’m linking up with Hoarding Books and First Line Friday to share the first line from If for Any Reason by Courtney Walsh, as well as my review below.

Emily Ackerman hummed when she was nervous.

If for Any Reason by Courtney Walsh

The Basics

Title: If for Any Reason

Author: Courtney Walsh

Publication Date: February 3, 2020 (available now on Amazon and Christianbook!)

Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover: Emily Ackerman has traveled the world, her constant compass and companion a book of letters her mother left for her when she died. With no father in the picture, her mom’s advice has been her only true north. But when professional failure leads Emily back to Nantucket to renovate and sell the family cottage she inherited, she wonders if her mom left advice to cover this . . . especially when her grandmother arrives to “supervise.” And especially when her heart becomes entangled with Hollis McGuire, the boy next door–turned–baseball star who’s back on the island after a career-ending injury.

As sparks fly between her and Hollis, Emily is drawn to island life, even as she uncovers shocking secrets about the tragic accident that led to her mother’s death. With her world turned upside down, Emily must choose between allowing the voices from her past to guide her future or forging her own path forward.

My Thoughts

Courtney Walsh is one of my favorite authors, and she does not disappoint with her new book! I love that Emily’s story is interspersed with the letters from her mom, and chapters that go back in time to show us glimpses of her mother’s life. Hollis and Emily’s friendship developed beautifully, as they got reacquainted and began to fall for each other. Jolie, Hollis’ daughter, added sweet, tender, and thought-provoking moments, both for Hollis and Emily and for us as readers. Hollis and Emily each came to Nantucket facing their own challenges, and I loved how they challenged each other and encouraged each other to grow.

After tragedy and failure, Emily vowed to take her mother’s advice and protect her heart, running away before anyone could get too close. But Hollis (and Jolie) slipped through her defenses and helped her realize life is so much richer when you give your heart to someone who will take care of it, even when it means taking risks. I loved Emily’s story of finding what she was meant to do in an unlikely way, and Hollis’ story of connecting with his daughter and finally being the father she needed. This poignant, heartfelt story is quintessential Courtney Walsh, with her signature layered plot and rich characters – a must-read for any fan of contemporary romance!

First Line Friday | A Girl’s Guide to the Outback

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m so glad the weekend is here again – I have a lot of good books in my TBR stack! I hope you have plenty of time for reading this weekend! 🙂 Today I’m linking up with Hoarding Books for another First Line Friday, and sharing from Jessica Kate’s second novel, A Girl’s Guide to the Outback.

“Samuel Payton was an idiot.”

A Girl’s Guide to the Outback by Jessica Kate

The Basics

Title: A Girl’s Guide to the Outback by Jessica Kate

Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Publication Date: January 28, 2020

My Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover

How far will a girl go to win back a guy she can’t stand? This funny, sweet, and romantic story proves that opposites do attract—and that God has a sense of humor.

Samuel Payton is a passionate youth pastor in Virginia, but below the surface, he’s still recovering from the blow of a failed business and insecurities he can’t shake. His coworker, start-up expert Kimberly Foster, is brilliant, fearless, and capable, but years of personal rejection have left her defensive and longing for a family. Two people have never been more at odds—or more attracted to one another. And every day at work, the sparks sure do fly.

When Kimberly’s ambitious plans for Sam’s ministry butt up against his risk-averse nature, Sam decides that obligations to family trump his work for the church. He quits the ministry and heads home to Australia to help his sister, Jules, save her struggling farm. As Kimberly’s grand plans flounder, she is forced to face the truth: that no one can replace Sam. Together they strike up a deal: If Kimberly comes to work on Jules’s dairy farm and lends her business brains to their endeavor, then maybe—just maybe—Sam will reconsider his future with the church.

As Kimberly tries her hand at Australian farm life, she learns more about herself than she could’ve ever expected. Meanwhile Sam is forced to re-evaluate this spunky woman he thought he already knew. As foes slowly morph into friends, they wonder if they might be something even more. But when disaster strikes the farm, will Sam find it within himself to take a risk that could lead to love? And will Kimberly trust God with her future?

My Thoughts

I wasn’t crazy about Jessica Kate’s first book, Love and Other Mistakes, but I’m glad that didn’t keep me from reading this one! We met Kimberly and Sam in the first book, but this one can definitely be read as a standalone. The seamless way Australian culture and vocabulary were included added interest and uniqueness to the story, and I thought the characters were more compelling in this book. Kim and Sam look like opposites on the surface, but as their friendship grows, they find that the past hurts they’re both dealing with help them understand each other better. I also really enjoyed the secondary storyline that focused on Sam’s sister Jules and her former fiance, Mick. Overall, a solid story about family, purpose, and overcoming obstacles, with a little humor!

First Line Friday | Collateral Damage

Happy Friday! It’s time for another First Line Friday hosted by Hoarding Books, a linkup where we share the first line from the book closest to us (or one we’re currently reading or recently finished). Today I’m sharing the first line from Collateral Damage, the first book in Lynette Eason’s new Danger Never Sleeps series. Keep reading for my review below!

“Sergeant First Class Asher James stared at Captain Phillip Newell, sure that he’d heard wrong.”

Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason

The Basics

Title: Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason

Series: Danger Never Sleeps (Book 1)

Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

They thought they left the fight behind on the battlefield.
But their greatest struggles are just beginning.

Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others, but her days of helping military personnel are over. She’s got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she’s not equipped to take on more.

Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.

Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor. When he arrives at her office, she isn’t there–but a dead body is. When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack–and that her secrets go even deeper than his own–Asher vows to protect her no matter what.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed Lynette Eason’s recent Blue Justice series, so I was excited to see a new series from her, with the first two books coming out this year! This first book was intense, with lots of action as Brooke and Asher begin to uncover the truth about a fellow soldier who was accused of treason and end up discovering a sinister plot that will test their faith and skills. The action and suspense didn’t take away from the character development, as we got to know Brooke and Asher as two people struggling with the effects of trauma and trying to adjust to life after tragedy. They were relatable, believable characters, and their friends-to-more story was very well done. This nail-biter of a book is wrapped up with quite a twist, with a shocking yet satisfying ending.

I think this may be my favorite Lynette Eason series yet! Watch for the next book, Acceptable Risk, coming out in August 2020.

Now it’s your turn! Please share the first line of the book you’re reading in the comments below, and don’t forget to head to Hoarding Books to see what other first lines other bloggers are sharing or to share your own!

First Line Friday | The Way of the Brave

Happy Friday! I am so excited about the book I’m sharing from today – the first book in Susan May Warren’s newest epic romantic adventure series! The Way of the Brave was just released this week, and the next two books are definitely on my must-read list for 2020. Since today is First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books, here’s the first line:

“He should have never left Alaska.”

The Way of the Brave by Susan May Warren

The Basics

Title: The Way of the Brave by Susan May Warren

Series: Global Search and Rescue Series (Book 1 of 3)

Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense/Adventure

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover: Haunted by the memory of a rescue gone wrong, former pararescue jumper Orion Starr has no desire to join Hamilton Jones’ elite rescue team. But he also can’t shirk his duty when the call comes in to rescue three lost climbers on Denali in Alaska.

Jenny Calhoun’s yearly extreme challenge with her best friends is her only escape from her guilt. The former CIA profiler and psychiatrist green-lighted an operation against the Taliban that ended in ambush and lives lost. When her cathartic climb on Denali turns deadly, she’ll be forced to trust her life to the most dangerous of heroes – the man she nearly killed.

Orion and Jenny will have to put their wounds behind them to save their friends…and their hearts.

My Thoughts

Susan May Warren is a master storyteller, and she proves it once again with this first book in her Global Search and Rescue series! The characters and the setting leap right off the page; you can imagine you’re right there on Denali, trying to make it off the mountain alive, or in Afghanistan with Orion and Jenny when she made the decision changed both of them forever. They both have to come face to face with their pain, doubts, and faith in this story, and their struggles are portrayed in such a genuine way.

This book definitely has more adventure than suspense, although I think there may be more of a suspense element to later books in the series. Fans of The Montana Marshalls series will enjoy seeing glimpses of familiar characters and events from a different perspective, but you can definitely read this book without having read that series. Now I can’t wait for Jake and Ham’s stories, coming out later in 2020!

Now it’s your turn! Please share the first line of the book you’re reading in the comments below, and don’t forget to head to Hoarding Books to see what other first lines other bloggers are sharing or to share your own!

Happy Tuesday, friends! Today I’m linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday, this time featuring my most anticipated new releases coming out January — June of this year.

When I’m not reading, I love searching Goodreads for new books by my favorite authors, so I can make sure I don’t miss any new releases! In fact, I already have 67 books on my 2020 New Releases shelf, so I don’t think I’ll run out of new reading material any time soon 😉 Here are the ten new releases I’m most excited about, in order of when they will be published:

1. The Way of the Brave by Susan May Warren (January 7, 2020)

Susan May Warren is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I’m so excited for her new Global Search and Rescue series! I’ve actually already read this one – look for my full review this Friday! (The second book in the series, The Heart of a Hero, is also coming out in the first half of this year – on June 2, 2020)

2. If for Any Reason by Courtney Walsh (February 3, 2020)

Courtney Walsh is one of my go-to authors for contemporary romance. This book is set in Nantucket and looks like the perfect summery story to brighten up a long winter!

3. The Land Beneath Us by Sarah Sundin (February 4, 2020)

Sarah Sundin is my favorite author for WWII historical romance! Her books are so rich with historical details and characters that welcome you into their world. This book is the conclusion to her Sunrise at Normandy series – I’ve been waiting since last February, and I can’t wait to read it!

4. The Fifth Avenue Story Society by Rachel Hauck (February 4, 2020)

I have loved Rachel Hauck’s books for a long time, and I always pre-order her new releases! She writes such rich characters and touching, satisfying stories. This new book looks like it will be another great one!

5. The Solid Grounds Coffee Company by Carla Laureano (February 4, 2020)

I have loved Carla Laureano’s Saturday Night Supper Club series over the last couple of years, and I can’t wait for this third book!

6. Stop Calling Me Beautiful: Finding Soul-Deep Strength in a Skin-Deep World by Phylicia Masonheimer (February 18, 2020)

I’ve been following Phylicia Masonheimer’s work for years (on her blog and Instagram) – she’s a great Bible teacher, encouraging women to go deeper in Scripture. I got a chance to read an early copy of her book via Netgalley, and it is powerful, practical, and encouraging. I think every Christian woman would benefit from reading it! I’ll be posting my full review soon. Follow Phylicia on Instagram here!

7. The Jerusalem Assassin by Joel C. Rosenberg (March 17, 2020)

I love Joel C. Rosenberg’s political thrillers! His Marcus Ryker series has been one of my favorites, and I can’t wait for this third book!

8. Silent Shadows by Natalie Walters (March 31, 2020)

When I read Natalie Walters’ debut novel, Living Lies, last year, she quickly rose to the top of my favorite authors list! Her second book, Deadly Deceit, was just as good, and I can’t wait to see where she goes with this last book in the series.

9. You’re Not Enough (and That’s OK): Escaping the Toxic Culture of Self-Love by Allie Beth Stuckey (May 5, 2020)

I started listening to Allie Stuckey’s podcast, Relatable, early in 2019, and I’m so excited she has a book coming out! She has a great perspective on political and cultural issues, and she has inspired me to go deeper in studying the Bible and learning theology. You can follow Allie on Instagram here and on YouTube here!

10. Stay with Me by Becky Wade (May 5, 2020)

Becky Wade is another one of my favorite contemporary romance authors! I loved her last series, The Bradford Sisters, and this book sounds like a great start to her new series.

Bonus! 11. Being Known by Robin Jones Gunn (April 28, 2020)

There are so many great books coming out in the first half of 2020, I couldn’t quite narrow it down to 10! I can’t leave Robin Jones Gunn off my list – her Christy Miller series was so influential to me as a teenager. I love that she’s still writing about Christy and her friends, now as adults! You’ll enjoy the Haven Makers series whether you’ve read the Christy Miller series or not 🙂

First Line Friday | End Game

Happy first Friday of 2020! I’m excited to be sharing from a great new book that’s coming out next week: End Game by Rachel Dylan. I’m linking up with Hoarding Books to share the first line and my full review below.

“I think they might be keeping dead bodies in their condo!”

End Game by Rachel Dylan

The Basics

Title: End Game by Rachel Dylan

Series: Capital Intrigue (Book 1)

Publication Date: January 7, 2020

Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

From the Back Cover: When elite members of the military are murdered on the streets of Washington, DC, FBI Special Agent Bailey Ryan and NCIS Special Agent Marco Agostini must work together to bring the perpetrator to justice. Unfortunately, all evidence points to a Navy SEAL sniper who Bailey refuses to believe is guilty.

When Bailey and Marco start to connect the dots between the victims, they wonder if there’s a deeper cover-up at play. After Bailey is targeted, it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep their dark secrets.

With the stakes getting higher by the moment, Bailey and Marco rush against the clock to determine whom they can really trust in this twisted conspiracy. As allies turn to enemies, the biggest secret yet to be uncovered could be the end of them all.

My Thoughts

Rachel Dylan is quickly becoming a don’t-miss suspense author for me! This first book in her new series is a blend of suspense and thriller that centers on a deadly conspiracy that reaches deep into our government. I really enjoyed the focus on NCIS, as that’s an agency I haven’t read much about in this genre. Bailey and Marco are great main characters, and I also enjoyed the two secondary storylines and the variety of characters. The story drew me in from the beginning with the action and suspense, and the romance was sweet and heartfelt without being over the top. I can’t wait for the rest of the series!

Now it’s your turn! Please share the first line of the book you’re reading in the comments below, and don’t forget to head to Hoarding Books to see what other first lines other bloggers are sharing or to share your own!
