First Line Friday | When the Day Comes

Happy Friday! Today I’m joining the First Line Friday linkup, hosted by Reading is My Superpower, and featuring one of my favorite books so far this year!

Williamsburg, Virginia
May 5, 1774

“For as long as I could remember, my mama had told me that my life was a gift. But at the age of nineteen, I had yet to see how this life I was living – or rather, the lives I was living – could be anything other than a burden.”

When the Day Comes by Gabrielle Meyer

Title: When the Day Comes

Author: Gabrielle Meyer

Series: Timeless (Book 1)

Publication Date: May 3, 2022

Genre: Historical/Time Travel

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

Libby has been given a powerful gift: to live one life in 1774 Colonial Williamsburg and the other in 1914 Gilded Age New York City. When she falls asleep in one life, she wakes up in the other. While she’s the same person at her core in both times, she’s leading two vastly different lives.

In Colonial Williamsburg, Libby is a public printer for the House of Burgesses and the Royal Governor, trying to provide for her family and support the Patriot cause. The man she loves, Henry Montgomery, has his own secrets. As the revolution draws near, both their lives–and any hope of love–are put in jeopardy.

Libby’s life in 1914 New York is filled with wealth, drawing room conversations, and bachelors. But the only work she cares about–women’s suffrage–is discouraged, and her mother is intent on marrying her off to an English marquess. The growing talk of war in Europe only complicates matters.

But Libby knows she’s not destined to live two lives forever. On her twenty-first birthday, she must choose one path and forfeit the other–but how can she choose when she has so much to lose in each life?

My Review

When the Day Comes is an absolutely captivating story by Gabrielle Meyer! It is a unique twist on the dual timeline & historical genres, with the heroine, Libby, living in both 1774 and 1914. As she approaches her twenty-first birthday, she must choose one path to live for the rest of her life. This fascinating premise is handled brilliantly, with rich historical detail and engaging characters.

Libby is such a relatable heroine, and I found myself rooting for her from the first page. She is faced with tragedy and difficult decisions in both timelines, and Ms. Meyer did a wonderful job of weaving powerful spiritual themes throughout. I enjoyed seeing history come to life through Libby’s eyes, as she lived through the beginnings of both the American Revolution and World War I. The twists and turns kept coming, leaving me holding my breath and wondering how Libby could possibly have a happy ending. I was surprised and delighted by the satisfying conclusion, and I am very much looking forward to the next book!

First Line Friday | All That It Takes

Happy First Line Friday! Today I am featuring a new release by one of my go-to authors – All That It Takes by Nicole Deese.

“As the door to our new life swung open and my ten-year-old son rushed across the threshold to explore the second-story apartment, the you-break-it, you-buy-it policy flashed across my mind like a hazard warning.”

All That It Takes by Nicole Deese

The Basics

Title: All That It Takes

Author: Nicole Deese

Publication Date: April 5, 2022

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Women’s Fiction

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

When the ever-cautious Val Locklier finally agrees to a cross-country move with her nine-year-old son to take a job with her best friend, Molly, everything she had planned for the future unravels within the first week. After pushing aside her anxieties about renting an apartment from Molly’s twin brother, whom she barely knows, she accepts an invitation for an elite filmmaker’s mentorship. Caught between her insecurities and new possibilities, she feels completely unprepared for the challenges ahead.

Pastor Miles McKenzie returns home from abroad to discover that not only does he have an intriguing new tenant living upstairs, he’s been banished to a ministry on life support. Disillusioned and restless, he pursues a relationship with Val without stopping to consider the timing or asking God to direct his steps.

As Val struggles to stop hiding behind the camera and Miles wrestles with shattered expectations, they’ll find that authentic love and sacrifice must go hand in hand.

My Review

All That It Takes is a charming story – the perfect blend of lighthearted moments, sweet romance, spiritual truths, and characters who tug at your heartstrings. This book picks up where All That Really Matters left off, although it can be read as a standalone. Val and Miles, who we met in the last book, are both facing major changes in the trajectory of their lives.

Val’s story is one of facing her fears and stepping outside her comfort zone. Her realization that God can use her story to change lives in dramatic ways is a powerful example of vulnerability and authentic faith. Miles faces his own crisis of faith in a way, as his plans for his life are knocked off course for reasons outside of his control. His eyes are opened to new ways of doing ministry, in a way that is moving and thought-provoking. And of course, Val’s son Tucker brings plenty of fun and laughter to the story!

While I would put this book in the contemporary romance genre, it is so much more – it is full of real, relatable characters who experience both the grit and grace of life. I highly recommend this series, especially to fans of authors like Becky Wade and Courtney Walsh!

A Hundred Crickets Singing | Book Review

Happy Tuesday! Today I am sharing my review of Cathy Gohlke’s newest book, A Hundred Crickets Singing.

The Basics

Title: A Hundred Crickets Singing

Author: Cathy Gohlke

Publication Date: April 5, 2022

Genre: Historical fiction

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

In wars eighty years apart, two young women living on the same Appalachian estate determine to aid soldiers dear to them and fight for justice, no matter the cost.

1944. When a violent storm rips through the Belvidere attic in No Creek, North Carolina, exposing a hidden room and trunk long forgotten, secrets dating back to the Civil War are revealed. Celia Percy, whose family lives and works in the home, suspects the truth could transform the future for her friend Marshall, now fighting overseas, whose ancestors were once enslaved by the Belvidere family. When Marshall’s Army friend, Joe, returns to No Creek with shocking news for Marshall’s family, Celia determines to right a long-standing wrong, whether or not the town is ready for it.

1861. After her mother’s death, Minnie Belvidere works desperately to keep her household running and her family together as North Carolina secedes. Her beloved older brother clings to his Union loyalties, despite grave danger, while her hotheaded younger brother entangles himself and the family’s finances within the Confederacy. As the country and her own home are torn in two, Minnie risks her life and her future in a desperate fight to gain liberty and land for those her parents intended to free, before it’s too late.

My Review

This powerful sequel to Night Bird Calling brings readers back to No Creek, North Carolina, in a split time story that spans two wars. The cover is gorgeous, and the story inside is even more beautiful! The ramifications of the Civil War are still impacting the characters we know and love during the WWII timeline. The racism that still exists in the 1940s is made more evident by the war, as young black men are sent to fight on behalf of an oppressed people, only to return home to the scorn and injustice that has persisted through the last 80 years.

In this book, we see Celia Percy grow into a courageous young woman, willing to stand up for justice. The discovery she makes one stormy night may have implications for the town that no one could have imagined. Celia draws strength and inspiration from the story and diary of Minnie, the young woman who lived at Belvidere Hall decades earlier. The tragedies and triumphs of these characters will steal your heart from beginning to end, and this poignant story is one that will stick with you long after the last page. If you enjoy gripping stories that bring history to life, don’t miss A Hundred Crickets Singing!

First Line Friday | The Master Craftsman

Happy Friday! It’s time for another First Line Friday linkup hosted by Reading is My Superpower, and today I”m featuring The Master Craftsman by Kelli Stuart.

Genre: Split-time historical/contemporary

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

In 1917, Alma Pihl, a master craftsman in the House of Fabergé, was charged to protect one of the greatest secrets in Russian history–an unknown Fabergé Egg that Peter Karl Fabergé secretly created to honor his divided allegiance to both the people of Russia and the Imperial tsar’s family. When Alma and her husband escaped Russia for their native Finland in 1921, she took the secret with her, guarding her past connection to the Romanov family.

Three generations later, world-renowned treasure hunter Nick Laine is sick and fears the secret of the missing egg will die with him. With time running out, he entrusts the mission of retrieving the egg to his estranged daughter, Ava, who has little idea of the dangers she is about to face. As the stakes are raised, Ava is forced to declare her own allegiance–and the consequences are greater than she could have imagined.

My Review

Kelli Stuart is a new-to-me author; the beautiful cover and premise of this book drew me in. I wanted to like it, but I never felt connected with the characters in either timeline. The treasure hunt in the present day seemed a little unrealistic to me, especially towards the end. Even so, I did enjoy learning some history about the Russian Revolution and Fabergé eggs. I know that many readers loved this story, so if you enjoy treasure hunts and early 20th century history, this book might be for you!

Mulberry Hollow | Book Review

She’s driven to protect her loved ones as a workaholic doctor in the tiny mountain town of Riverbend Gap, North Carolina.

Contractor Wes Garrett is hiking the Appalachian trail, in memory of the man who died saving his life, when an illness racks his body. After an agonizing fifteen-mile hike to Avery’s clinic, he collapses on her doorstep. He recovers to find himself in debt again, this time to a beautiful doctor.

When he decides to help her renovate a rundown carriage house, the obstacles to their attraction sprout like weeds—starting with the woman waiting for Wes at the end of the trail. Will he be able to relinquish the debt he owes his best friend? And will Avery find the courage to risk everything for love?

My Review

Mulberry Hollow brings us back to the mountain town of Riverbend Gap along the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina, and to the Robinson family. This book focuses on Avery, the town’s doctor, and Wes, a hiker who stumbles into her clinic one rainy night. They are both complicated characters, with tragedy in their pasts and regrets they are allowing to shape their futures. Although neither one was looking for a relationship, their pull towards each other and the fact they bring out the best in each other is undeniable. I enjoyed this book much more than the first one in the series! If you are looking for a sweet, clean, small-town romance, you will love Mulberry Hollow.

First Line Friday | Sea Glass Cottage

From the Back Cover:

Christi Reece is desperate. The one-time golden girl’s life has tarnished, and a cascade of setbacks has left her reeling. She needs help, and she’s certain Jack Colby is in a position to provide it.

When she shows up in Hope Harbor, however, Jack wants nothing to do with the woman who betrayed him. He’s built a new life on the Oregon coast–and there’s no room in it for Christi, even after she takes refuge in a charming but mysterious cottage nearby. Yet it soon becomes apparent his opinion of her may need revising . . . especially when he ends up needing her help.

Can these two hurting souls open their hearts to a new beginning?

My Review

Returning to Hope Harbor feels like going home! This charming seaside town is the perfect place to escape to for a few hours in one of Irene Hannon’s beautifully written stories. Sea Glass Cottage is a fairly light read, but that doesn’t mean the characters don’t deal with some tough issues and tricky situations. Christi and Jack are both dealing with pain from their pasts – including pain they caused each other. In the secondary storyline, Beth and Steve are dealing with grief and regrets after the death of their son. Both second-chance romances will touch your heart and bring a smile to your face.

Long time readers of the series will love the appearances from fan favorite characters, especially Charley the taco artist and his seagull friends, Floyd and Gladys. Hope Harbor is the perfect place to find peace and hope, for characters and readers alike. Fans of Denise Hunter and Christina Suzann Nelson will enjoy this series!

First Line Friday | The Souls of Lost Lake

Happy Friday! For today’s First Line Friday linkup, I’m featuring a brand new book by Jaime Jo Wright. The Souls of Lost Lake just came out this week – if you’re looking for a new book to read this weekend, this would be a great choice!

“Campfires were meant to be places of shadows.”

The Souls of Lost Lake by Jaime Jo Wright

Title: The Souls of Lost Lake

Author: Jaime Jo Wright

Publication Date: April 5, 2022

Genre: Split-Time Suspense

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

To save the innocent, they must face an insidious evil.

Wren Blythe has long enjoyed living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, helping her father with ministry at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing, an all-out search ensues, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons, the murderess who is believed to still roam the forest. Joining the search, Wren stumbles upon the Coonses’ cabin ruins and a sinister mystery she is determined to unearth.

In 1930, Ava Coons has spent the last several years carrying the mantle of mystery since the day she emerged from the woods as a thirteen-year-old girl, spattered with blood, dragging a logger’s ax. She has accepted she will never remember what happened to her family, whose bodies were never found, and that the people of Tempter’s Creek will always blame her for their violent deaths. And after a member of the town is murdered, and another goes missing, rumors spread that Ava’s secret is perhaps more malicious than previously imagined.

Two women, separated by time, must confront a wickedness that not only challenges who they are but also threatens their lives, and the lives of those they love.

My Review

I think The Souls of Lost Lake is my favorite of Jaime Jo Wright’s books (so far)! From the gorgeous cover to the captivating story inside, this book was almost impossible to put down. Spanning almost a hundred years, Ava and Wren’s stories are woven together in an unexpected but satisfying way. Ms. Wright does an amazing job of developing the characters in both timelines into relatable, engaging characters who will immediately find their way into readers’ hearts.

The suspense in both storylines kept me reading late into the night, complemented by just the right amount of creepiness as well as romance. I love a story that can keep me guessing, and all the twists and turns in this book caught me off guard! The spiritual truths about good and evil, life and death, forgiveness and redemption, give the book a richness and depth that will stick with you long after the final page.

First Line Friday | Dark Angel

Happy Friday, and welcome to First Line Friday! Today I am sharing the first line of Dark Angel by Brian Andrews & Jeffrey Wilson.

“Nicholas Woland, known simply as “l’américain” to prisoners and guards alike, sat on the edge of his hard, narrow cot, hands resting idly on his knees.”

Dark Angel by Andrews & Wilson

The Basics

Title: Dark Angel

Authors: Brian Andrews & Jeffrey Wilson

Series: The Shepherds (Book 2 of 3)

Publication Date: April 5, 2022

Genre: Military Thriller

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

Former Navy SEAL Jedidiah Johnson returns to Nashville ready to begin his training with the elite warriors known as the Shepherds. He thinks he knows what to expect when he arrives on the sprawling, state-of-the-art facility but quickly realizes he’ll have to find his place as the rookie leader of a new team. Then he starts having visions of an imminent attack overseas, and with the clock ticking, Jed and his team are dispatched to neutralize the threat. All the while, Jed hears whispers of another threat . . . a name that raises unexplained fear and anger throughout the Shepherds organization.

Once a military man, Nicholas Woland betrayed the Shepherds and all they stood for when he joined their enemies. After years in prison, Woland is eager to get back in action spreading chaos and death. And he has been freed for a purpose: a sinister plot that will result in hundreds of casualties and incite worldwide religious warfare for years to come.

As Woland and the Shepherds race toward a collision, Jed must rely on his gifts, his training, and his untested team to make critical decisions on a global stage—never realizing that a secret servant of the enemy is growing closer and closer to him.

My Review

“…I can tell you that God is here, right now. He’s with us. And so are the evil forces, because Satan is just as real. There’s a war raging all around us – a war that most people can’t see. But some of us can.”

Dark Angel picks up right where Dark Intercept left off, with Jed Johnson officially part of the Shepherds organization. The action is ramped up even higher than the first book in the series when Jed and his team are thrust into an urgent mission before their training is complete. This intense thriller showcases the war between good and evil in both the natural and supernatural realms. The military action and tactics are so realistic, while the spiritual elements add depth and top-notch character development to the story. Sarah Beth, who we met in the first book, is one of my favorite characters – I love how her friendship with “Uncle Jed” plays such an important role. This book is not only an enjoyable thriller, but also a thought-provoking look at the spiritual battles raging around us. Fans of Joel C. Rosenberg and Ronie Kendig will love this series!

Charmed by the Italian immigrant’s boldness, Priscilla spends time exploring the wondrous sights of the expo with Luca―until a darkness overshadows the months-long event. Haunted by a terrible truth, Priscilla and Luca are sent down separate paths as the night’s stars fade into dawn.

My Review

“That is our mission, dear. To see people for who they are beneath the pain. Beneath the sin. To see them as God sees them: a beautiful creation, with plans and purposes only he knows.”

Count the Nights by Stars is a gripping split-time novel, bringing Nashville history to life in both the 1890s and 1960s. The iconic Maxwell House hotel plays a role in both timelines, as does the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Both Priscilla and Audrey are strong, compelling heroines – both coming to terms with their places in their families and their purpose in life. The story also shines a light on the dark subject of human trafficking in a powerful, eye-opening way. Welcome to First Line Friday! Today I’m featuring Bethany Turner’s new release, The Do-Over. It’s the perfect fun weekend read!

Publication Date: March 15, 2022

My Rating: 5 Stars

From the Back Cover:

Sometimes dreams come true. Other times, the best outcome begins with an epic fail.

Career-driven McKenna Keaton has devoted her life to attaining the senior partnership at her law firm. So asking a man on a date should be nothing. But the past four days have been the worst of her life and have called everything she thought she knew about herself into question. Besides, she can’t remember her last real date—one that didn’t involve using a blind date as an opportunity to get a stranger’s perspective on effective cross-examination techniques. (It’s like sharing fondue with a jury!)

But a real date? And with shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess? Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham’s darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. He also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would never commit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty, it appears—it’s absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the girl Most Likely to Succeed.

My Review

I love a good Bethany Turner rom-com, and The Do-Over was just the fun read I needed! Her writing is the perfect blend of witty humor, clever dialogue, and charming characters. I found myself rooting for McKenna from the first page, and I love that her family is such an integral part of the story. Her relationships with her sisters add plenty of depth and heart! Henry is the perfect hero for her: a high school rival all grown up, with the ability to make her question everything she thought she knew about how her life would go. Their sweet romance, sprinkled with plenty of twists and funny moments, makes for a delightful story from beginning to end. I highly recommend The Do-Over to readers who enjoy authors like Melissa Ferguson and Jenny B. Jones!
